Roofing is measured by the square. When a roofing company gives you a estimate and it says the house is 17 squares for example. That means they measured the roof and it comes to 1700 square feet. A square of roofing  is 10'x10' area of the roof. A square equals 100 square feet.

What Will It Cost To Get A New Roof, Here's A Price Breakdown?

• You can expect to pay $125 - $450 per square (10'x10' area) for the roofing material.
• A roof tear-off (removing all the old roofing) will cost at least $150 per layer and per square.
• You should expect to pay at least $100 per square for labor to install the new roofing.
• If you have any plywood sheeting that needs replaced figure at least $75 per sheet.
• Drip, Valley, Wall and Edge Metal are extra material that you should check to see if they are on the estimate. All new roofs should include new metal.
• Air vents are a must, they help the house breath and also reduce the risk of mold.

Many roofing companies will ask you for a down payment, don't let this scare you. I would break the payments up into 3 or 4 stages. I think a 1/3 of the total for the down payment is reasonable.
